1/6 Modelo de física de questões de partículas pesadas Todo o material conhecido no universo – de galáxias remotas aos aminoácidos em seu corpo – é descrito pelo modelo padrão. A Bíblia da física explica as partículas de que os átomos são feitos e as forças que as controlam. O modelo padrão é a teoria científica mais bem-sucedida do mundo, e nos permitiu desenvolver todos os nossos eletrônicos modernos, etc. No entanto, a teoria envolve falhas graves. Por exemplo, não explica a gravidade. Assim, os físicos estão constantemente tentando melhorá-lo, e há 10 anos, um grande projeto foi iniciado: pesando o bóson W, ou seja, uma partícula de troca de força que está em jogo em conexão com a radioatividade. Quando o resultado foi publicado em 2022, os físicos abriram os olhos. Ao contrário de todas as expectativas, os dados altamente precisos demonstraram que o bóson W é muito mais pesado do que o previsto pelo modelo padrão. 0.09 % is how much the new W boson mass data deviates from the standard model prediction. © The standard model describes tiny constituents The standard model is physicists’ ABC. According to the theory, all matter is made up of 6 different quarks, 3 types of electrons, and 3 kinds of neutrinos. They are known as matter particles. 3 forces of nature – the electromagnetic force and the strong and weak nuclear forces – work between matter particles by means of force exchange particles. The Higgs boson provides all the particles with mass. When an atom is struck by a light particle, it knocks an electron into a higher energy state. When the electron slips back, a new light particle is emitted. © Shutterstock & BiM Gluons glue atomic nuclei The atomic nucleus’ neutrons (left) and protons consist of quarks. The strong nuclear force bind them together by means of force exchange particles: gluons (yellow). The force is extreme, and nuclear power works by splitting the atomic nucleus, releasing energy. 4/6 © Shutterstock & BiM W and Z trigger the weak nuclear force Radioactive substances are unstable, as they have too many neutrons in the atomic nucleus compared to the number of protons. To restore stability, they convert a neutron into a proton by means of W and Z bosons, emitting an electron. Mas agora, os novos dados sobre a massa do bóson do W ameaçam derrubar todo o modelo. O W bóson é 0,9% muito pesado Em abril de 2022, físicos do agora abandonado acelerador Tevatron nos EUA publicaram a sua pesagem de 4 milhões de bósons W. O resultado são os dados mais precisos sobre a massa do bóson do W, que os cientistas indicam ser de 80,43335 bilhões de elétron-volt (GeV) correspondentes à massa de 85 prótons. Although this is only 0.09 % more than the standard model’s prediction, it is a major deviation. The standard model’s margin of uncertainty is only 0.01 %. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abk1781 5/6 Collisions between protons and antiprotons in the Tevatron accelerator produced 4 million W bosons, which physicist have used to measure the force exchange particle’s mass. © Fermilab Handout/EPA/Ritzau Scanpix There are only two possible explanations of the deviation. Either the data involves a systematic error, that nobody has identified yet, or the universe includes unknown particles or forces of nature that influence the W boson’s mass, making it heavier than expected. Particles have hidden twins All atomic building blocks and force exchange particles get their mass from the Higgs boson. W bosons bind strongly to the Higgs boson, becoming heavier, whereas electrons, etc., bind more weakly and are hence lighter. The standard model only operates with one Higgs boson, but a theory exists, according to which several Higgs bosons exist, i.e. the theory of supersymmetry. If unknown Higgs bosons bind to the W boson, this could explain that it is heavier than predicted by the standard model. Perhaps the W particle has a secret twin that can explain the mysterious dark matter of the universe. According to the theory, all particles have an undiscovered and heavier twin particle. Matter particles have a force exchange particle as their twin, and force exchange particles such as the W boson have a matter particle. The theory of supersymmetry involves two revolutionising prospects. Unlike the standard model, it can describe gravity via quantum mechanics, i.e. by means of force exchange particles. According to the theory, gravity is mediated via hypothetical particles known as gravitons. Secondly, it could be the undiscovered heavy twins that make up the universe’s mysterious dark matter. https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/supersymmetry 6/6 That would solve one of the major physics mysteries, as dark matter is just another word for the fact that physicists cannot account for 85 % of the matter of the galaxies. If the W boson’s weight is due to supersymmetry, the new data will allow us to predict the heavy twin particles’ mass very accurately. So, the theory can be tested in experiments. Finding unknown particles in a particle accelerator is like looking for a needle in a haystack, but if physicists know what to look for, it will be much easier. First of all, however, it is important to verify the W boson's heavy weight. Already next year, the LHC particle accelerator will produce a record-breakingset of data concerning the W boson’s mass, and if the heavy weight is confirmed, the way has been paved for new physics.
