Writing this book would not have been possible without the support of various people. We are
most grateful to Jutta Peterburs and Judith Schmitz, who spent countless hours correcting our errors,

Chapter 1, Brain Asymmetries—Two Millennia of Speculation, Research and Discoveries and
Chapter 3, The Connected Hemispheres—The Role of the Corpus Callosum for Hemispheric
Asymmetries were written in the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst, where a monastery-
like academic seclusion gave us the possibility to start a competition at being the first to finish a
chapter. Onur was later a fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute for advanced Study (STIAS, South
Africa) for 3 months, where he enjoyed a similar situation to finalize a few more parts of this book.
The laterality research community has always been a group of friendly and supportive indivi-
duals, and we are thankful to many of its members for providing permissions to reuse figures to
illustrate their research in the book, reminding us of long-forgotten papers and helpful discussions
